It’s important to remember – while bands like Radiohead and NIN are meaking international headlines by giving their music away – that bands have been doing this for quite a while, and continue to do so, obviously realizing that the business models for music distribution are rapidly changing.

One group of guys that deserve attention for both making beautiful music and for giving it away are Danish DJ collective Den Sorte Skole. They also deserve props for recognising the importance of online presence. Besides their official site, the share pictures, videos and music on the MySpace page (I’ve been writing off MySpace for a while now. I need to reconsider that. It is obviously very much alive and kicking when it comes to music), and on Facebook. Give them a look and a listen. They kick ass.

I love my iPod – no, allow me to rephrase – I love my girlfriend. I REALLY LIKE my iPod! And I’m constantly looking for new ways to make the most of it. Yestreday, I stumbled across Tubesock, a little app, that allows me to transfer videos from youtube to my iTunes library, and thereby, onto my iPod.

Tubesock is simple… all you do is paste the URL of the youtube vid you want to take with you into the app, and Tubesock does the rest. Next time you sync your iPod its vids galore! All for a mere $15… You can try it for free, but you’ll only get a few seconds of each video – good for a sneak preview, though.

I know there are ways to get vids on your celly, but to me, Tubesock has a few advantages that all outweigh the advantages of downloading vids onto the phone:

Price – a one time expense of $15 is cheap. Downloading a bunch of vids onto the phone will end up costing me a fortune in data download

Quality – the screen on my iPod video is WAY better than that on my N73 – as is the sound

Speed – while I can’t download on the fly, I can still download and transfer a bunch of clips in the fraction of the time it would take me to download them onto the phone

All in all – at $15, Tubesock is well worth the money, and has already provided me with hours of entertainment for my next long train ride – do check it out.

Oh, I almost forgot – Tubesock also lets you rip videos into your Movies library on your Mac – for Front Row viewing pleasure, or for PSP, if you prefer to watch the clips there – and it integrates with both Firefox and Safari for even easier conversion of clips.

…and no, I’m not affiliated with Tubesock in any way, I just think it’s a really cool piece of software.
