Canonical Intranet Homepage (Jakob Nielsen’s Alertbox)
In his new Alertbox Jakob Nielsen points out that even though intranets for the most part are similar in appearance and software, it is still essential to have knowledgable employees working with the strategic side of a company’s intranet development.
“So, even when company branding determines an intranet’s visual appearance and portal software decides its page layout, companies will still need intranet teams to focus on factors of deeper import: features, content, information architecture, and other aspects of interaction design.”
While this has been true regarding both intra- and internet for YEARS, it seems pivotal to point it out yet again, in an age where standard solutions are of high quality, regarding both visuals and functionality.
There still has to be someone who makes sure that whoever is in the target audience will have the best possible user experience. And someone still has to make sure that content is relevant and well written.
