I’ve gone through just about every aspect of my new phone, the Sony Ericsson z800i and for the most part, I’m lovin’ it!
Look & feel
It’s a cool looking phone! sleek and nicely designed – a lot less chunky than earlier 3G phones. The external screen is nice, and by using the buttons on the sides of the phone, you can check your next appointment, the phones memory status and use the camera while the phone is still closed. This means that you only have to actually open the clam shell once in a while, and that’s a great way to conserve power.
Organizer
The organizer works really well – syncs seemlessly with my pc (contacts, calendar, contacts, notes etc.) both using the mini-USB data cable, and using the Infrared link (which is, as could be expected, a bit slower than the cable).
Music
The mp3 player works well – the sound is pretty good, and the external speaker even sounds alright, as an alternative to a radio in a park or what not. the only two probs when it comes to the mp3 player is the battery (which is put to the test even when you don’t use the z800i as a miniature boom box) and the memory… If you’re serious about bopping to the z800i you should really spend some dough on a Memory Stick Duo that a little bigger than the 64MB one that comes with the phone – but then that will easily cost you more than the phone itself, so…
Internet & email
The email-client, after having a bit of trouble setting up the pop3 account to my Gmail, is a cool feature. It seems I turn on my pc less often, as it’s so much quicker to check my email on the phone. If you want to surf the internet with the phone, you should, however, stick to pages that are optimized for pdas and phones – though the screen is super nice, it is still pretty small…
Camera & video camera
I soooo enjoy having a megapixel camera in my phone!! The videosequences are nice, and the pictures come out great (the photo light is a bonus feature.
The downside
There’s only really one problem with the z800i. The battery life. It does not last long at all, and while I must admit that I play with the phone a lot, it could be better… but I kinda knew this going in to the whole 3g thing…
To do
- Check phone as modem for pc
- Check video call function
…that’s about it really…
All in all
At DKK 599,- (approx. $100) this phone is a steal – buy it – buy it now!

How did you set-up gmail on your sony-ericsson? I’ve heard getting gmail pop3 to work on an S-E phone is impossible?
Thanks!
Using the z800i and gmail is a breeze… settings need to be as follows:
Connect via: [telephone company]
incoming server: pop.gmail.com
port: 995
encryption: TLS/SSL
mail box: [ONLY username - NOT @gmail.com]
Password: [password]
outgoing server: smtp.gmail.com
outgoing port: in my case 465…
email adress: [kinda self explanatory]
Hope it helps!
